MLive.com's Phil Zaroo, a disciple of the great Killer Kowalski, reported today that Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz is confident in his team's ability to run the ball Sunday against the Chicago Bears.
Even without Jahvid Best, Schwartz feels that the Lions have adequate talent to carry the load. It's been reported that Kevin Smith, the Lions' third-round draft pick from the 2008 NFL Draft, will play Sunday, although the extent of his role isn't clear. Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said Smith could see action, but didn't delve into the topic much deeper.
However, despite the seemingly up-in-the-air status of Lions backs, Schwartz remains confident and ready as his 6-2 club takes on the 5-3 Bears.
Don't forget, Keiland Williams and Maurice Morris will also be involved.
"All our guys have a little different skill set; different things that they do well; plays they run differently than others," Schwartz said, "but all our guys have the ability to break long runs.
"Jahvid obviously has more speed than our other backs, but all of them have the ability and all of them have broken long runs for us this year."
While I'm frothing at the mouth -- literally -- for Sunday's game against Chicago, I think it's going to be drastically different from the Week 5 duel at Ford Field in Detroit. For one, it's cold in November, especially in Chicago, a challenging place to win.
If you ask me, NFC-North games don't get much better than what we're going to have against the Bears.
