The Detroit Lions' beloved, former restricted free agent Kevin Smith is back. And now, he could see action Sunday against the Chicago Bears, as running back Jahvid Best recovers from a concussion, reports MLive.com's Anwar Richardson.
Smith was waived after the 2010 season, as Best emerged as the clear No. 1 running back. Smith, the Lions' third-round pick of the 2008 draft, didn't exactly live up to expectations, but he should at least help shore up a backfield that desparately needs Best to be at his... well, his best.
Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan recently told reporters that Smith will be in the lineup Sunday for the 6-2 Lions, who travel to Chicago to take on the Bears (5-3) in a pivotal NFC-North battle at Soldier Field.
"I could see him playing some this game," Linehan said. "The expectation is to get to Sunday and see where we are. The other two guys (Maurice Morris and Keiland Williams) are ready to go. There is a scenario there where Kevin can play for us."
Linehan said Smith knows the lay of the land, and could be useful in certain scenarios.
"First of all, he knows the offense," Linehan said. "It's a natural fit for him to come in and be comfortable with everything we're doing. He picked it up right away ... He basically just took the ball and ran with it yesterday. I feel really good about him being able to be called upon in any situation for us."
